Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is already a massive download on PS5 and PS4, and choosing the physical route to try to get around any updates won't work either. It's been revealed just 72.23MB of data is on the Modern Warfare 2 disc itself, meaning it's essentially useless on its own and requires you to download the full 150GB to start playing.
Spotted by the Twitter account Does It Play?, it's a worrying sign for those still committed to buying boxed copies of games. What we have here is pretty much a digital copy of Modern Warfare 2, except you need to put a disc in the machine to verify you own it every time.
The huge download requirement will almost certainly stop many players in their tracks, rendering them unable to play on launch day since they need the other 150GB to go with their measly 72.23MB-sized disc. Are you one of those people? Share your disappointment in the comments below.

Still better to get this so you can sell on the rights to download the game. If you buy purely digital, that’s it, you’re locked into the full price of every game.
The disc version of the CoD games only works as a kind of key for the game…
Why even bother with a disc then?
Is there anything on the box to state that an internet connection is required to play the game?
Assuming there must be as that's bound to create a court case in the making?
After plopping in cod modern warfare remakestered and finding out there was only two practice maps and a wet fart on the disc I’ve stopped buying cod unless it’s on clearance for less then $10.
All depends on the type of game. Something like CoD makes sense digitally being a multiplayer game. Something like fav franchises like Silent Hill, Yakuza, RE, MGS or many of the big 1st party PS exclusives like GoW I want physical. No need to care about physically owning the many junk food type games like CoD and Far Cry clogging up shelf space
You can sell the disc. On PSN store, you pay full for a game that you deleted after one hour of play because its poop. No trial with no trial period and no gameplay screenshots or video on the store. You are basically asked to pay A LOT of money for something you'll not enjoy. Reviews? Ok so it doesn't have bugs and it's "objectively good" but that's not enough… If I bought Daemon Souls remake for full price on PSN with no chance to resell the game I would end up throwing my PlayStation out of the window. And Playstation instead of introducing trial versions across the platform they put that behind insane paywall. WTF.
@Beerheadgamer82 Very true, but at least in the case of Far Cry, 6 has 30-some GBs on the disc. At least it has some use, unlike this game where the disc is literally a product key and a coaster. Like the person above said, at least you can sell the disc, but this is still ridiculous. Luckily I have no interest in the game unless it gets really cheap at some point to play the campaign.
Yeah, at this point it's not that different from those packaged digital codes.😅
@thefourfoldroot1 tell that to the people who sell their used consoles together with the accounts (at proportional prices, of course). Obviously risky and not something the platform owners will condone, but a thing that happens nonetheless.
@mrmartinrohr "No trial with no trial period and no gameplay screenshots or video on the store"
Which is certainly awkward as far as digital game stores go, but not quite a disaster in the age of YouTube. As I often say, we should grab a time machine and go tell the gamers of 1982 how hard we have it here with pre-purchase research.😏
@nhSnork
Well, yes, I’m downloading all ps plus games whether I’ll play them or not so it can be sold in the event of my death for more money.
Not really something I would do in life though. And not really practical if you just buy a game and regret it and want to get the bulk of the money back.
Taken from Activision Blizzard's own website:
Protecting the Planet
Activision Blizzard is committed to doing our part to protect the planet for current and future generations. We do this by reducing the environmental impact of our operations, from our digital and physical game design to the organizations we partner with to produce, distribute, and support our games. We know attending to our environmental responsibilities is one of the most important ways we can help build a better world.
Im sorry, but with the shenanigans here, they may as well not have printed a disc. The environmental impact of millions having to download all that data is not insignificant, so at least try and reduce that by including some of the content on disc. No reason the single player cant be on there with an unlock key to download multiplayer
@KilloWertz Far Cry 6 was my first time buying an FC game digitally and I've actually regretted it ever since. All other FC games grabbed physically and then sold them on. If I'd have purchased FC6 physically I would have definitely traded it in for in store credit
I've also read elsewhere that the file size is now reduced on PS5 with patch 1.04 to 78GB.... and a 4K bluray disc is 100GB... So they technically could have fitted it all on disc.
Shady!
Just put out voucher code cards and be done with it if this is all the disc is for. What's even the point of printing a disc for this?
Yeah, I'm one of these disc fools, still buying every game physical. What a joke, 70mb
Its not as if this is a new practice though and i dont condone it before anybody chips in with the old "you like everything about sony blah,blah,blah.." comments..did anybody really expect this years call of duty to be any different? It eats your storage space,is only a license key on the disc heck its the same old source engine modified to look better but in reality call of duty is the same as its always been..yet people buy it in droves every year same as the fifa crowd. I bought it because its by infinity ward and i just dont like the call of dutys that the other 2 studios produce. Nothings going to change in the future either so its a case of dont like it dont buy it..this will be the last cod i buy unless there comes a day that a full fat native ps5 version rolls out and not a prettier cross gen version and that wont happen until the ps4 is put to rest and that wont happen anytime soon either..
You have to question the environmental footprint here to an extent. It's basically just waste for the sake of them having something they can sell on store shelves.
Not great.
Well, that's what I've been saying for years now ...Actual physical video games are slowly becoming a thing of the past at this point (except maybe on Switch).
Buying a disc is essentially a glorified license key you have to insert every time you want to play, even if the entire game may be on there. And I'm all for physical media, always have been (though they could use some more environmentally friendly packaging).
It's very sad, but almost every single game needs an avalanche of updates and patches before they're even finished now anyway, so what can you do?
This, though, is on a whole other level and a complete waste of resources. Just make it a paper disc with a download code at that point, or better yet, a simple voucher. Unbelievable.
@get2sammyb Apparently EA’s going to stop selling discs in German speaking countries.
It’s only a matter of time till they’re all digital.
The fact that SP isn’t at least on there is insane. I’m definitely not getting this.
At least, they could have put the music and videos on the disc to reduce the amount of downloads and use the disc drive in a meaningful way.
@Fight_Teza_Fight I just saw that but it's unclear if they'll partner with a distribution company.
@get2sammyb indeed but then why do the digital prices have to be so expensive..there are no packaging, shipping etc? The only cost is the digital servers that have to run 24/7 and thats not really green is it? Stopping physical sales so companys can reduce their carbon footprints is a great way forward but nobodys going to be happy paying £70+ for something that exists only online..
@get2sammyb Thats probably it then. I did think that it was too soon, but you never know with EA.
@get2sammyb re footprint
most disc games are on the disc. can be uninstalled and reinstalled as often as you like without adding to footprint. often sold after use and played by others, for the same footprint.
all digital means every player downloading.... multiple times if you replay. and you pay a higher price for that, that in theory should be cheaper.
LA Noire did this on PS4 too. 4GB on disc, download the rest.
Heck I think most disc based games do that now. The medium can't keep up with file sizes as is, so most companies won't even bother even if it would fit.
Switch is the only system with real physical versions nowadays. Although day 1 patches exist with that system, the vast majority of physical Switch games are at least playable in their base cart form.
@Rob_230 Yeah, and the add to that the colossal amount of essentially useless plastic created for the discs, cases, and the film covering those cases. Pretty appalling.
I feel very sorry for the blokes with crappy internet... because I had struggled with sub 4mbps for many years until finally getting 100mbps down/up last year.
@mariomaster96 no reason except to have a physical collection on your shelves
Understandably and as games get 'bigger' in file size as they are using much higher quality assets etc, the ability to 'distribute' physical media is a hindrance.
Discs are limited in size and once 'full' have to put the 'rest' online to download. Its Obvious. Whilst the disc may not contain the entire game, it does contain what you are actually purchasing - the Licence to access Software - you never buy/own the Software as that is owned by the Publisher/Developer anyway.
@Nintendo4Sonic My PS5 disc came today. Installed it and it says 72MB. What a joke.
Well at least you can use the disc for frisbee golf.
My brother gets 100GB of high speed data per month on his T-Mobile Home Internet. This would be a deal breaker for people like him.
150GB is even a giant chunk out of my 1.2TB cap with Comcast.
Hardly matters since we'll all be dowoading them on gamepass soon 👍
It's weird how digital games are so dominant over physical games when the disc PS5 to my knowledge has sold a lot more than digital PS5. Shouldn't it be the other way around. Unless PS made more disc PS5's than digital PS5's. If that's the case with 85% of games purchased is digital, then why is the disc PS5 made more than a digital PS5. Getting a disc PS5 makes more sense cause it does both but still odd there's way more disc PS5's in comparison to digital games purchased. I don't think no console maker has the balls to be the first only digital console yet. Purchasing any type of entertainment movies, music or video games digitally just feels throwaway to me so entertainment I don't much care for is digital and the stuff I really adore I want physically. Personally something like Netflix streaming is offensive to my fav movies, like why would I want to unreliably rely on streaming services for my favs when you can most likely purchase it on a reliable 1080 bluray or latest 4k to reliably watch it whenever you please with zero worries for your favs. I'd hate to be forced on how to purchase my entertainment. If there's games I'm enjoying on PS plus it means those games are most likely not as important to me as other games that I've already purchased physically day one. If PS start doing 1st party day one on plus digitally they'd then have no choice to start massively upping the prices of all plus tiers to make up for the games massive costs to make
What anti consumer move. Altho, it's cod... Couldn't expect more from them
This should be against the law as must customers will assume at the minimum the campaign is on the disc, where in reality nothing is on the disc. The gaming industry should have to state by law wether the game is on the disc, & state it on the box itself & made clear you have to download the game as the disc is a unlock key.
Not the first time this has occurred.
you buy a game on disc you expect that game on disc.
Every game you buy on disc has some massive Day 1 download patch that replaces about half to all of the disc contents anyway.
That said, I'd still buy physical so I can sell it later on - can't do that with your DOE.
It's not like anyone who actively plays COD needs space for games aside from.... what maybe madden and fortnite and their "video" collection serving as the closest thing they'll ever have to intimacy?
Lmfao so they good.
There was a time you could fit more than 70 games in 70MB
This really extracts the urine.
I have no plans on buying this anyway, because I haven't cared about a Call of Duty game since Modern Warfare 2 was made p2p. But this is one trend I don't like
@mariomaster96 You can sell it
@NeThZOR I'm still on max 20megs, digital hasn't been playing nice to me but I cope buy leaving them to download overnight, I wonder if I would ever be able to experience high speeds like that one day 😤
@Thumper I ment "Why would Activision bother to print discs if the put almost nothing onto it anyway?", not the gamers
But yeah, I guess it's better than those download-codes in a box
Embrace the digital future baby!
Oh well, this has been and continues to not surprise me, especially with how many patches games receive post launch. I haven't bought a physical game for Playstation in years, unless it wasn't sold digitally (old PS3 games) and I am completely content with a digital collection. Shame for physical collectors though as the death of physical is less than a decade away. No one buys music or movies anymore, and games are next.
After all, Cryin' Jim Ryan said it best, why would anyone play this?
While i knew this was coming and bought it digitally it’s still extremely shady behavior.
They should have just made it a digital only release.
What about those with crap Internet, itll take over a month to download
@Rob_230 Reading this infuriates me. What a BS statement by them.
@get2sammyb I think the same of codes in a box its just a waste.
@mariomaster96 I dont agree its a waste of a good disc. If its a 100GB UHD disc then it should be a crime.
@sanderson72 Release it digital first and print a disc later or just dont bother.
Just one of the many reasons I won't buy games from this scummy company anymore
@Korgon I got screwed with one of those when I bought infinite warfare legacy edition for modern warfare remastered when I claimed the ps plus version it replaced the license so now I have to buy it again if I want to play it without ps plus got in touch with both Activision & playstation support & they both basically said tough s***
As someone who moved over fully digital a few years ago, you are effectively just paying for the licence disc as a few have said
Making discs is anti-eco. It makes billions of plastic garbage that destroys life
This is utterly outrageous and it's not the first time that they do this. Don't they give a thought about the players who have an average internet connection? Anyway I'm skipping COD this year
What an absolute joke and a complete waste of materials, Sony and others should make it necessary to have a playable version of any game on the disc if it has a physical option
hahahaha so much for all those physical collectors then ... almost as bad as the Nintendo Switch and their Codes-in-boxes
@Charbelmk
To be honest they haven’t really thought about low bandwidth players since WWII.
That was the first game in the series that I remember requiring a 50gb “patch” before you could actually play it.
A buddy of mine worked at GameStop at the time and a bunch of people were returning it according to him. Basically they bought the disc version for the campaign and local split screen multiplayer and thought you could do that with just the disc.
Thing is that the disc only had a few gigs of content on it and none of it was playable without the “patch.” So if your internet sucked you were in for a rough time.
This is no suprise to me, discs are simply an annoying download ticket, a waste of plastic energy and fuel. I dont miss them in the slightest, and the ability to jump from game to game and never put a disc in the machine is almost worth paying the extra for.
Almost. For me, the ecological concerns of all this useless plastic is the deciding factor that means I would never buy a pysical disc if I can consume digitally, even though that comes at a price premium.
Appreciate not everyone is in that position, but I will celebrate hard when this token physical disc thing eventually ends.
Of course id love it if discs still had full final code on them, then they would have a reason to still exist for those that wish to preserve.
@Titntin video game discs are highly reusable, people generally don't throw them away, they either store/collect them or sell/donate them, they aren't on the same level as single use plastic for food and drink etc as far as waste is concerned.
Downloading a game is a small carbon footprint too.
@Balosi No mate, they never have final code, they are simply a ticket to download the game. When you consider the manufacture of the disc, the case and the plastic to wrap it together with the inks and energy used, then the fuel to transport it, when its essentially a useless item simply allowing you to dowload the finished version, its an ecologically very unsound way to consume what is clearly a digital medium.
If you wish to greenwash your own buying habits, thats up to you, but its your attitude thats the problem with the planet.
@OrtadragoonX 100% at least let them put the full single player campain on disc. I rarely play multiplayer games and used to love the COD stories so if they were only included on the disc it would have been sufficient for me
@Titntin ecologically speaking you are right but as I said in my comment, not everyone has yhe luxury or the infrastructure to shift to a digital purchase. Downloading a day one patch of few gb is different than downloading the full game of 30-40-90 gb especially when the connection is slow. If everyone had the perfect infrastructure Google Stadia wouldn't have shut down
A lack of physical media will just prompt a lot of people to get a good pc with a lot of storage then never pay for another game ever. Because there are other methods of getting games y'see.
Dropping physical media will be a double edged sword for the publishers.
As for me , if it's not physical media it's likely not for me. I'll just got back to my vast collection ( I've been collecting heavily since the Sega Master System) and enjoy everything that has gone before.
Digital has its place. As a cheap, cheap backup to a physical disc to save wear and tear on the disc reader of your console. Other than that, digital simply has no place and is being sold to you, the fool, by snake oil salesmen. Digital media is genuinely fools gold. If you're unfamiliar with that term look up an explanation in your browser.
It's just a shame a lot of the world is too blinkered in its opinions to see that fact.
Oh well, first world problems and all that.
Physical Forever.
@mariomaster96 You could always resell the disc if you wanted. You can't do that with digital games.
@Zemo55 I meant Activision, not the consumer
Why would Activision bother to print discs if they cheap out anyway
@Tr3mm0r You smoking plastic?
@Zemo55 Nope. I just say plastic is a problem in todays world so if one can eliminate it (for example digital only without discs and boxes) then one should do it.
And how big is the problem? Just the amount of nanoplastic particles (smaller than 0,1 μm) that can get inside human and animal cells is enormous. Statistically throughout a year You and Me eat a Debit Card of plastic that our bodies aren't capable of digesting nor extrecting therefore it is stored in our cells and modifying their functions.
